Unsubscribes & suppression

How do I add an unsubscribe footer or header?

Turn on a visible opt-out footer for a campaign, or the one-click unsubscribe header for your account. Both start off.

3 min read

Both opt-outs start off, and a campaign can launch with neither. The footer is set per campaign: an unsubscribe link or a line inviting a reply, followed by your postal address. The one-click unsubscribe header is one switch for your whole account.

You are responsible for including an opt-out and a postal address where the law requires them. This page describes the product, not legal advice.

A footer always shows your postal address, so add it before you turn a footer on.

  1. Open Settings, then Sending defaults.
  2. Enter your address in Footer postal address, up to 500 characters.
  3. Select Save the address.

Only an Owner or Admin can change it. The lines you type are the lines recipients see. Every campaign with its footer on uses this one address, and a change reaches their next send.

  1. Open the campaign draft.
  2. Open the Unsubscribe footer setting, beside Track emails.
  3. Turn on Add an unsubscribe footer.
  4. Under Footer style, choose Link or Reply line.
  5. Edit the Link text or Sentence, or keep the default.
  6. Select Save.
Look What recipients see Default wording
Link Your link text, linked to their own unsubscribe page, and address Unsubscribe
Reply line Your sentence and your address. There is no link. Not interested? Reply and I won’t email you again.

The wording is plain text on one line, up to 120 characters. Merge tokens such as {{firstName}} and HTML tags are not allowed.

Follow-ups carry the same footer as the first email. You can change the footer until the campaign sends its first email. After that it stays as it is, so every recipient gets the same one.

If you choose Reply line, record each reply that asks you to stop with Mark as opted out.

  1. Open Settings, then Sending defaults.
  2. Under Unsubscribe, turn on Email app unsubscribe button.

The header applies to every campaign in the account from its next send, including follow-ups and preview sends. It is invisible in the message. Mail clients such as Gmail decide whether to show their own Unsubscribe button, and for one-to-one mail they often show none.

The campaign preview shows the footer in smaller type below the message. Its link is a sample that goes nowhere. In a preview send, the footer link and the header lead to a page saying it was a preview, so testing them never suppresses anyone.

Google asks a sending domain that sends about 5,000 messages a day to personal Gmail addresses for both the one-click header and a visible unsubscribe link.

The campaign’s launch review shows Google’s rule for large senders when the header is off or the footer is not on as Link, and the domain’s Gmail sends in the last 24 hours plus this campaign’s planned daily sends reach 5,000. It offers Turn on the unsubscribe header and Use a Link footer for what is missing. It never stops the launch.

Message or state What to do
The footer switch is unavailable and says Needs a postal address. An Owner or Admin adds the address in Sending defaults first.
Clearing the address says a campaign has its unsubscribe footer on Turn that campaign’s footer off first, or keep an address.
The wording is too long, has line breaks, merge tokens or HTML tags Shorten it to 120 characters on one line, in plain text.
Ask an Owner or Admin to change it Ask someone with that role to update the setting.
A send says the footer’s link, sentence or postal address did not survive Simplify the end of the message body. ColdMerge did not send that message.
